The FIFA World Cup Trophy was on display today at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Road Town.
The visit is part of a tour that sponsors and organisers say is the
“largest journey” the trophy has ever travelled — 92,000 miles.
The tour includes stops in 89 countries across all six FIFA confederations in nine months.
According to a press release, “the tour will give more than one
million people around the world the chance to experience football's most
coveted prize in their own communities.”
A few hundred people attended the unveiling of the trophy at the
Multi-purpose Sports Complex on Thursday, including Governor Boyd
McCleary and Premier Dr. Orlando Smith.
Additonally, several youth football players in uniform were in attendance.
“The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour™ by Coca-Cola will be the most
inclusive, participatory event ever, inviting fans around the world to
get up close and personal with the same trophy that is presented by FIFA
to the country winning the FIFA World Cup™,” the release stated.
The journey will also include a first ever pan-Latin America tour,
with events in 39 countries across the region that is home to the host
nation, Brazil. The tour has stops in 50 countries that have never had
the opportunity to host the trophy before, according to the press
release.
The trophy was in Puerto Rico before arriving in the VI on Thursday and will now head to the Dominican Republic on Oct. 11-13.
